Course: EMT Integrated Refresher Program Class A - BLOCK Instruction (2 Sessions)
 
Location: Bergen County EMS Training Center, East 281 Pascack Road, Paramus, NJ.
 
Description: The refresher class is designed to refresh your knowledge and skills needed to recertify your EMT certification.  In 2012, changes were made to the EMT Refresher program. The old CORE 13 has been replaced with three 8 hour core refresher programs:

CORE "A" - Airway/Patient Assessment 
CORE "B" - Medical
CORE "C" - Trauma
 
These courses may be taken in any order and need to be completed prior to your expiration date along with your 24 elective CEUs needed to re-certify. This program includes classroom instruction and practical skills. In order to successfully complete this course, the student must attend ALL sessions, obtain at least 70% on all tests, & successfully pass the skills stations.

Textbook:
We strongly recommend a textbook for this program. The textbook can be purchased during office hours. The tuition exemption form does NOT cover book fees. We suggest that you purchase the book prior to class. You will have at least one 50-question written evaluation. There will also be practical skills evaluations. You must complete both to receive credit for the day.  
 
The book we use is AAOS EMT Transition Manual (ISBN# 9781449609153). All books are non-refundable.

A must for emergency medical services vehicle operators, this course promotes critical thinking during pressure situations. The course features videos that show situations ambulance drivers face every day.

Course Overview (Course ID - EEB29B):
This interactive lecture explores how to provide optimal care to a hemorrhaging patient.  It underscores the importance of recognizing hemorrhage and understanding how it affects the body in order to prevent hemorrhage from leading to serious injury, shock, or, ultimately, death.

 

The online curriculum consists of different modules consisting of 1 hour of online elective Continuing Education Training.

 

1. Students will receive a unique class key code to access and enroll in the program.

2. Class would be for 1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The Bergen County EMS Training Center has developed a professional and comprehensive online curriculum for forward-thinking EMS providers wishing to improve their leadership, management, and supervision knowledge and skills, increase their authority and responsibility within their organizations, and change their field for the better. This program was to help transition from being one of "us" to one of "them." The online curriculum consists of 9 different modules consisting of 10 hours of online elective Continuing Education Training.

1. Students will receive a unique class key code to access and enroll in the program.

2. Class would be for 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The Bergen County EMS Training Center is pleased to offer you an innovative online training program. The program is 10 hours long and has been approved by the NJ State Department of Health for 10 CEUs. This program was approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) and /or meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.

The process to navigate through the program:

1. Students must register on our website and obtain a class access code.

2. Cost per program is $15.00 (Waivers are not accepted).

3. Students must enroll in the class (see directions).

4. Students must complete the class and submit the Google Form before 12/31/2025 to receive CEU credit. Please allow ample time for processing. If you are using these CEUs for June 2024 renewal, the Google Form must be timestamped before midnight on 06/27/2024.

 

5. Students must complete the online classwork before taking the post-tests.

6. Students must complete the entire below-listed program and pass all the post-tests with a 72 to receive credit for the class. (No partial credit will be issued.)

Course Overview (D38A98):
This interactive lecture explores key considerations for responding to an obstetric or
maternity call. Although childbirth and pregnancy are both naturally occurring states,
they have the potential for serious complications, including maternal and fetal death.
With the advent of modern medicine, maternal and infant mortality rates have been
significantly reduced, and close medical monitoring usually reveals problems well before childbirth. Nonetheless, EMS practitioners must be well prepared to manage a variety of complications that can occur during pregnancy and childbirth.

This interactive lecture explores the prehospital care of psychiatric emergencies and
behavioral crises, situations that may be the result of an acute medical situation, mental illness, mind-altering substances, stress, or other causes. This module discusses how to assess a person who exhibits signs and symptoms of a psychiatric emergency or a behavioral crisis and determine what kind of emergency care may be required in these situations.

 

The online curriculum consists of different modules consisting of 1.5 hours of online elective Continuing Education Training.

 

1. Students will receive a unique class key code to access and enroll in the program.

2. Class would be for 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Course Overview (36B268):
This interactive lecture explores how to recognize and manage patients with signs of
allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. EMS calls involving an allergic reaction are common
and, although it is rare, death as a result of an allergic reaction is possible. The EMS
practitioner's ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction may be the only thing standing between a patient's life and imminent death.

This interactive lecture explores six toxidromes and their management. It also delves
into Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome and Barbiturate Abstinence Syndrome, as
well as the effects of abuse of prescription medications, poisonous plants, and
nonprescription pain medications, and management of these patients. Finally, it includes a
special section on pediatric poisonings.

 

The online curriculum consists of different modules consisting of 1 hour of online elective Continuing Education Training.

Course overview (Course ID - 68FF73):
This interactive lecture explores ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. It is estimated that
approximately 700,000 strokes occur per year in the United States. The incidence of
ischemic stroke is about 300 per 100,000 individuals, but the incidence in African-
Americans is substantially higher than in whites. Hemorrhagic strokes account for
approximately 10% of all strokes, with a higher predilection in African-Americans and
those of Asian descent.

 

The online curriculum consists of different modules consisting of 1 hour of online elective Continuing Education Training.

  1. Describe the threat posed by terrorism.
  2. Identify potential terrorist targets in your jurisdiction.
  3. Describe how to respond to a terrorist incident.
  4. Describe the dangers posed by explosive devices.
  5. Explain the difference between chemical and biological agents.
  6. Describe the dangers posed by radiological incidents.
  7. List the types of terrorism.
  8. Describe the need for decontamination of exposed victims and
    response personnel.

 

The online curriculum consists of different modules consisting of 1.5 hours of online elective Continuing Education Training.

Course Overview (FB8D22):
This interactive lecture explores the number of concerns you must be aware of when
responding to a call and arriving on the scene. The information gathered by the dispatch
center is critical for not only your safety but for that of everyone in the general area.
Your assessment of the scene is a continuous event that must come with a plan of
action if the need to evacuate arises.

 

The online curriculum consists of different modules consisting of 1 hour of online elective Continuing Education Training.

1. Students will receive a unique class key code to access and enroll in the program.

2. Class would be for 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU).

3. Students would need to complete the class and submit the Google Form before 12/31/2025 to receive CEU credit. Please allow ample time for processing. If you are using these CEUs for June 2024 renewal, the Google Form must be timestamped before midnight on 06/27/2024.
